What type of wood varnish or wood oil (if any) would people use to treat wood used for a climbing storage rack? Any thoughts, keeping in mind ropes, slings and harness material being stored on the rack? The wood is reclaimed wood from old pallets, plained and sanded. Cheers

Safe wood finishes for wooded storage units for climbing ropes and harness?

  • Very cool project! You would be fine to use a polycrylic or polyurethane finish, as a matter of fact those hardwood floors that you have probably put your rope on are most likely poly finished.

  • Thanks for the reply. Yes I totally hear you regarding, for example, the floor and how that has been treated. I work around climbing for years now but never really DIY so just being (probably) far to cautious regarding possible chemical transfer and damage to PPE. And yes the rack turned out nicer than I thought. All the best.

  • Your ego should drip enough that will work.

  • Question to the world of Reddit, maybe someone has some good advice on this. I have built a wooden storage/drying rack for my climbing gear (including ropes) and was thinking about types of wood finish such as a non oil based clear varnish. Does anyone out there know of any concerns using such wood finish on wood that will be used to store and hold climbing PPE. So far the advice I have been given is not to use any varnish or use a non oil based one. Any factual advice or evidence for a type of finish which is safe for use on wood that would hold PPE appreciated. Maybe i'm nerding out and overthinking this but hey who knows. Cheers.
